An artificial vagina (AV) in veterinary medicine is a device used to collect semen from male animals, primarily for artificial insemination (AI), semen analysis, or preservation. It mimics the natural conditions of the female reproductive tract to stimulate ejaculation in a safe and controlled manner.
Outer Jacket (Sheath): A cylindrical outer casing made of rigid or semi-rigid material (usually plastic or rubber).
Inner Liner: A soft, flexible rubber or latex lining that holds warm water to simulate body temperature and provides the pressure.
Water Jacket: A space between the outer jacket and the liner that is filled with warm water (around 4245C) to maintain temperature and pressure.
Lubrication: The inner liner is lubricated to reduce friction and mimic the female vaginal environment.
Collection Tube or Receptacle: Attached at one end to collect semen after ejaculation.
